Zea mays, Poaceae
oder Zea mays var. indurataTraditional hard maize that has been cultivated for over 350 years and is ideal for Riebel or polenta.
The cultivation of Rhine Valley Riebel maize dates back to the 17th century. As almost every family in the Rhine Valley cultivated this maize, a great genetic diversity developed over the centuries. For this reason, the numerous original varieties are combined into one large landrace variety under the name 'Rhine Valley Riebel maize'. As the name suggests, this variety is particularly suitable for 'Riebel', a dish made from maize flour, which used to be the staple food of the poorer population.
